Meet Davey, new teaching partner at the Nature Centre!

Davey arrived at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre in October 2020

Thanks to the support of our Friends members, after a three year search, in August 2020 the Friends of the Helen Schuler Nature Centre Society purchased and began training a gopher snake for the Nature Centre.

The new snake has been named ‘Davey’ and will provide interactive experiences that build connection and understanding with an oft misunderstood species.

Davey is a very close relative to the local bullsnake found in Lethbridge. He was intentionally chosen as a captive-bred species from a reputable Canadian breeder.

After more than one year of regular handling and scenario training, we are confident the new snake is ready to take over for Sophie, the former snake-in-chief at the Centre.

Plan a visit to the Nature Centre to meet Davey and learn more about the snakes of Lethbridge! Davey’s big debut coincides with a new exhibition ‘Snakes Alive’ now on display at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre. The exhibit provides a chance to discover some of the weird and wild aspects of snake biology while learning more about the snake species that naturally occur in Lethbridge. This family-friendly exhibition offers plenty of opportunities for learning through play with a variety of fun and interactive displays. Learn more about the ‘Snakes Alive’ exhibit that is on display until Spring 2022.
