Snake Safety Talks

Four of Alberta's 7 species of snake call Lethbridge home.  These include Alberta's and possibly Canada's longest snake, and the province's only species which may pose a serious health hazard with its venomous bite.  The Bullsnake can reach lengths of over 6 feet and the Prairie rattlesnake is considered the only venomous snake in the province.  Both can be found in Lethbridge.

Do you have a group or organization which may be interested in learning about our reptile neighbours?  Ken Moore, a naturalist who specializes in snakes, gives public talks on all the species of snake which can be found in the province.  He can focus his presentation on whatever species you'd be interested in and can vary the length of his talk to suit your group but most talks range from 20 minutes to 45 minutes.  You can learn what a pregnant rattlesnake does to prepare to give birth; find out about the rattlesnake imitating bullsnake; and learn the differences between our various garter snakes, they're not all the same.

Honourarium for Ken's talks help to further the aims and objectives of the Helen Schuler Nature Centre with its education programs; donations can be made to the "Friends of the Helen Schuler Nature Centre Society."

Outdoor Learning Classroom & Amphitheatre Project

The Outdoor Amphitheatre is a central part of all Nature Centre programs. It is an excellent spot to bring together groups of people to learn and connect with the local environment. We are starting to raise funds for this project and are seeking assistance from the community to improve this outdoor space for the next generation!
