The Great Horned owl is one of the earliest nesters in Lethbridge, laying eggs sometimes as early as March. To get a head start they don’t build their own nest, but instead use a previous year’s nest built by another large bird such as a hawk or a magpie. There are many different species of owl, 7 of which can be found in Southern Alberta, but the Great Horned owl is arguably the most widely known, and easily recognizable by their distinctive “inquisitive” call.
