Listen for killdeer’s far-carrying song: “kill-dee, kill-dee, kill-deer”, as they run in spurts across the ground. Look carefully as you are walking, killdeer don’t build a nest, instead they scratch a small shallow depression and lay their eggs on the ground. Their eggs are extremely well camouflaged and hard to distinguish from the rocks and sticks around them. Please stay on the trail to make sure you don’t accidentally step on their eggs.
