Travel Adventures 2020 Programs are ready to take flight!

Friends of the Helen Schuler Nature Centre Society are proud to announce five Travel Adventures presentations that will take place over the coming months. Travel Adventures is an ongoing series where local world travelers share their adventures with photographs that will help you discover the plants, animals and people of places you’ve always dreamed of exploring.

Everyone is invited to these engaging presentations scheduled at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre:

  • Spectacular Birds of Australia & New Zealand with Lyndon Penner on Monday January 20, 7pm

Australia and New Zealand are two destinations that have long fascinated naturalists, botanists, and bird watchers. With their wildlife and flora evolving largely in isolation, these two nations are home to some of the world's most incredible species and some of the world's most beautiful birds. Having lived and traveled in these places, Lyndon will be bringing you a colourful, lively presentation about some of these countries’ most spectacular and wonderful birds. You'll meet parakeets that work as pollinators, the improbable fairy wrens, and flightless emus and kiwi birds as well as many others.

  • Exploring Brazil’s Pantanal & Iguazu National Park with Joanna Fraser on Friday January 31, 2pm

The Pantanal is a UNESCO World Heritage and Biosphere Reserve.  It is the largest floodable plain on the planet and home to over 625 species of birds.  Adventure traveler Joanna Fraser will show highlights of this wonderful “off the beaten path” area on a visit in November 2019.   She will also show Iguazu Falls on a trip to this spectacle of 275 falls during the rainy season in November 2015.

  • A Taste of South America with Carol Leriger & Rick Andrews on Friday February 28, 2pm

1 - Carol-Rick-1705.jpg

Join Carol and Rick as they take you along on a recent adventure to the Peruvian cities of Lima and Cusco before continuing on through the Inca Sacred Valley to the archaeological sites of Chinchero and Ollantaytambo. From there, ascend with them into the Andes Mountains to the 15th century Incan citadel of Machu Picchu. The adventure will conclude with a visit to the amazing Iguazu Falls straddling the borders of Argentina and Brazil.

  • Birds in Our World with Chris Fisher on Friday March 27, 2pm

2 - Chris Fisher.jpg

Join best-selling 'Birds of Alberta' author and popular keynote speaker Chris Fisher for a worldwide journey for birds and for meaning.  For more than five years, Chris worked as lecturer on ships in which he explored every continent and over 160 ports around the world. From Alaska to the Antarctic and Stockholm to Samoa, birds (and other wildlife) were a constant, yet ever changing companion to his voyages.  This presentation will not only be a natural history showcase, but it will also reveal how wildlife encounters enrich our lives and have become meaningful symbols for cultures past and present.

  • Kootenay Plains with Derry Armstrong & Jessica Deacon-Rogers on Friday April 24, 2pm

Join experienced wilderness explorers to learn more about the amazing Kootenay Plains! Derry Armstrong is also a parks and trail planner who has spent extensive time helping people to connect with this montane area. Shielded within the front ranges of the Rocky Mountains, this unique grassland and forest mosaic is home to many species of rare plants, provides important habitat for wildlife and has been a culturally significant area for thousands of years. This presentation will provide a unique perspective about the importance of connecting to place.

Everyone is welcome to attend and admission is by donation. Proceeds from the events will go towards the Endowment Fund, supporting the Helen Schuler Nature Centre.

Reserved seating is available for all Travel Adventures presentations for a nominal donation and is highly recommended. Attending one, or all of the 2020 Travel Adventure presentations is an excellent way to show your support of the Friends of the Helen Schuler Nature Centre Society.

*Please note, tickets must be purchased separately for each Travel Adventures presentation (at this time, we are unable to sell a bundled package for all Adventures in one transaction).

Everyone in Lethbridge is encouraged to join us as a member to be a part of something great!
