Supporting Natural Leaders Project Action Bingo with Guided River Trip
The Friends of the Helen Schuler Nature Centre Society is proud to support the Natural Leaders Project’s Action Bingo Challenge.
The Natural Leaders Project (NLP) was piloted in 2015 by the Helen Schuler Nature Centre as a new environmental leadership model to serve Lethbridge students, teachers, schools, City employees and residents at large. The NLP uses environmental education best practices including:
Learning from the environment
Integrating multiple subjects or courses of study
Providing inspiration and hope with local case studies
Considering multiple perspectives, including Indigenous traditional knowledge
Contributing to real-world, environmental action projects
The program utilizes a mix of field trips, case studies, guest speakers, experiments, personal reflections and social action projects. This provides opportunity for ongoing interaction. Activities and partnerships are facilitated through monthly class visits by the Nature Centre’s Environmental Educator.
NLP participants are encouraged to complete an Action Bingo challenge - both independently and as part of program assignments. If participants complete all 20 actions they are entered for a chance to win amazing prizes like GoPros, Airplane rides around the city, horseback riding lessons, rock climbing lessons, hammocks, guided kayak tours, e-scooters, and more!
This year the Friends of HSNC Society worked with High Level Canoes and Kayaks to provide a guided canoe trip on the Oldman River! We hope that this experience on the land will reinforce a life-long love of the land!!
We appreciate the support from our Friends donors who help to make this possible! Thanks for your continued support of environmental education in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Each year, applications to the NLP school program reach new all-time highs and the diversity of audiences served continues to grow. In June, the Nature Centre sadly informed teachers and administrators that the Natural Leaders Project would not be accepting registrations for the 2022/2023 school year due to lack of committed funding for the program. We need your help to secure funding support from our community for the Helen Schuler Nature Centre to continue this important environmental education program.
