River Valley Conservation Projects Postponed

After looking at several other neighbourhood, community and shoreline cleanups across Canada, and internationally, for scheduled spring 2020 events it’s clear that they have all been either cancelled or postponed indefinitely due to the risk of community spread of COVID-19.

The health and safety of our volunteers, partners, and the community is our top priority. Following the advice of provincial and federal public health groups in relation to COVID-19, we have decided to postpone the 2020 river valley conservation projects (including Coulee Clean-Up, Shoreline Clean-Up, and Invasive Weed Pulls).

Why is the Nature Centre postponing the coordination of conservation efforts in Lethbridge?

  1. Conservation projects are a group activity – with groups ranging in size from 15—100+

  2. Clean-up kit supplies are a challenge—how do we safely provide/receive/sanitize kits in the COVID context?

  3. Garbage is often personal—from tissues to cigarette butts—how do we effectively message what to focus efforts on and what is ‘too risky’ to handle in the COVID context?

  4. Limited capacity of Parks to assist with remote garbage pick-up requests at this time.

We appreciate your understanding! We look forward to resuming our conservation projects in the near future.

We thank our conservation project supporters, including Alberta Eco-Trust Foundation, Alberta Conservation Association, Oldman Watershed Council, B93, Country 95, and the City of Lethbridge.
